belly-up

今天要介紹的詞還滿有趣的，指「垮了」、「死了」或「完蛋」的意思。根據網路權威字典The Free Dictionary的解釋，belly-up也可以用來說某家公司破產、或是沒戲唱，就像魚死掉肚子向上一樣：bankrupt; dead. (Like a dead fish that floats belly up.)

好，我們來看個例句吧！The restaurant went belly-up after being open for only three months. 那家餐廳才開三個月就倒了。

再來看另外一句：Never mind Billie, at least your love life hasn't gone belly-up. 別放在心上，貝莉；至少妳的愛情生涯還沒完蛋。

表責備：

1. You should have come earlier. 你應該早點來的！(should+have pp 表和過去事實相反之事)

2. I ought to have told him the truth. 我早該告訴他實情才是。


表命令：

3. Let there be no mistake. 不許出錯！

4. Let me alone. 別管我！

5. Let the door open. 讓門開著。

6. Let them read that chapter. 叫/讓他們讀那個章節。

哈，我想應該很多人在字典上都查不到這個字吧！這是一位外國人告訴我的，它源自loser，也就是輸家、失敗者之類的。但在這邊，這個字就變成了形容詞；所以就可以用來形容不務正業、只知道玩樂的人，或是很混很敗家。當然，也可以說心情低落、很糟糕；用在事上面又會有點不同喔！大概就是前景不被看好、沒有好結果之類的意思。

Somehow I felt loserish when arguing with my parents. 不知怎麼著，和父母吵架總讓我覺得自己很糟，很頹喪。
